After Winter

Martin Willitts, Jr.

The weather is breaking,
loosening its grip on the green
under snow. Crocuses are breathing,

sighing, Where is spring?
A few signs are being seen —
the weather is breaking;

nubs of first leaves are waking
to see what it all means.
Under snow, crocuses are breathing

green dreams. Father is dying
in a white room behind a screen.
The weather is breaking

across his face, whitening
just before spring seems
under snow. Crocuses are breathing,

purple, living briefly. I’m grieving;
letting him release, a dream
the weather is breaking
under snow. Crocuses are breathing.
